Watching an Ariane 6 lift off from the Guiana Space Centre (CSG) is one of those experiences you never forget: the rumble that reaches you several seconds after ignition, the orange trail tearing across the sky above the forest, the crowd holding its breath on the beach. But to enjoy this moment in the best conditions, one rule matters above all: stay in the right place. At Hostel Toucan, every year we host enthusiasts from mainland France and Europe who come for a launch, and the same question always comes up: where should you drop your bags to be as close as possible without getting stuck behind road closures on the big day? Here is our practical guide, based on the real distances we measure from our accommodation.
Understanding the geography of a launch before you book
The CSG covers nearly 700 km² between Kourou and Sinnamary, around 60 km north-west of Cayenne. Ariane 6’s launch pad (ELA-4) sits in the western part of the base, but the general public obviously cannot access it on launch day. Visitors gather at authorised observation points, mainly around Kourou.
The main public viewpoints
- Kourou beach (seafront): the most accessible option, around 12-15 km from the launch pad. Clear view of the ocean and the rising trajectory. Very busy on launch evenings.
- The Pointe des Roches viewpoint / lookout: a favourite spot among photographers, a few minutes’ walk from central Kourou.
- Official CNES sites by invitation (Toucan, Colibri, Agami, Ibis): reserved for guests and accredited visitors, 5-8 km from the launch pad. By registration through the CSG, with very limited places.
- The Sinnamary / Carapa road: for those who want to get away from the crowd, with a different angle on the ascent.
Worth knowing: on launch day, several roads around the base are closed for hours before liftoff. If you stay far away and count on driving in that same evening, you risk getting caught in traffic jams. That is precisely why staying right in Kourou changes everything.

Where to stay near the Guiana Space Centre: our accommodation in Kourou
Kourou is the obvious base. From here you are on foot or a few minutes’ drive from the viewpoints, you avoid the road closures, and you can follow up with the free tour of the Space Centre the next day (advance booking required on the CNES website, ID required).
Studios and apartments in the town centre
Our accommodation in Kourou is designed for couples and travelling pairs who come first and foremost for the launch.
- Distance to the seafront: 5 to 20 minutes on foot depending on the property.
- Distance to the launch pad (as the crow flies): 12 to 15 km, meaning a clear view of the ascent.
- Indicative budget: 70 to 110 € per night in season, depending on the period and length of stay.
- Ideal for: a 3 to 5 night stay combining the launch, the Salvation Islands and relaxation.
Houses and family accommodation in Kourou and Macouria
For families or groups of friends coming to share the event, we offer houses with several bedrooms and outdoor space.
- Capacity: 4 to 6 people.
- Indicative budget: 130 to 200 € per night.
- Advantage: equipped kitchen to prepare a picnic before heading to the viewpoint, and private parking, invaluable on busy evenings.
Staying on the Cayenne, Rémire-Montjoly or Matoury side
If you land late at Félix-Éboué airport (Matoury) or want to explore eastern French Guiana before the launch, staying on the Cayenne side makes sense. Allow 55 to 70 minutes by road to Kourou via the RN1. In that case, leave very early on the big day and plan for the road closures. Our accommodation in Rémire-Montjoly (beaches, close to Cayenne market and Place des Palmistes) is perfect for the sightseeing part of your trip.
Table of real distances from our accommodation
Here are the rough figures we share with our travellers (driving times in normal conditions, excluding closures on launch evenings):
- Kourou centre accommodation → Kourou beach: 5-15 min on foot.
- Kourou accommodation → CSG visitor entrance: 5-10 min by car.
- Kourou accommodation → Salvation Islands jetty (Kourou marina): 5-10 min by car.
- Rémire-Montjoly accommodation → Kourou: 60-75 min by car (RN1).
- Félix-Éboué airport → Kourou: approx. 50-65 min.
- Cayenne → Kourou: approx. 55-70 min.

Planning your stay around the launch
Choosing the right time
A launch can be postponed by a few hours to several days (weather, technical issues). Our advice: plan at least 3 nights, ideally straddling the announced date, to absorb a delay without stress. The dry season, from mid-July to mid-November, offers clearer skies and better chances of visibility, but launches take place all year round.
How a launch evening unfolds
- Check liftoff time on the official CSG / Arianespace channels the day before and on the day itself.
- Get settled early at the viewpoint (1 to 2 hours before for the beach on busy evenings).
- Bring water, insect repellent, a torch and a light layer: it is hot and humid even in the evening.
- After ignition, the sound takes several seconds to arrive: enjoy the visual first.
Beyond the launch: extend the adventure
While you are in Kourou, don’t leave without seeing:
- The Salvation Islands (including Devil’s Island), 1 hour by boat from the marina, a former penal colony turned magnificent natural site.
- The free tour of the Guiana Space Centre (by reservation), to understand the behind-the-scenes of Ariane 6 and Vega.
- A trip to the Kaw marshes (Roura) for caimans and birds, or to Cacao and its Hmong community.
- Further west, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni and the Camp de la Transportation, and the Maroni river by pirogue.
Remember to rent a vehicle right at the airport: in French Guiana, a car is essential, as public transport is very limited. And don’t forget the yellow fever vaccine, mandatory to enter the territory.

FAQ
How close to the launch pad can you watch an Ariane 6 launch?
The general public watches launches from authorised viewpoints around Kourou, mainly the beach and seafront, located around 12 to 15 km from the ELA-4 launch pad. The official CNES sites, which are closer (5 to 8 km), are reserved for guests and accredited visitors by registration through the Guiana Space Centre.
Should you stay in Kourou or Cayenne to watch a launch?
We strongly recommend Kourou. There you are on foot or a few minutes from the viewpoints and you avoid the road closures that affect the area for several hours before the launch. From Cayenne or Rémire-Montjoly, allow 55 to 75 minutes by road and leave very early so you don’t get stuck.
What happens if the launch is postponed after I book?
Postponements are frequent due to weather or technical constraints. Plan at least 3 nights around the announced date. At Hostel Toucan, cancellation is free up to 7 days before arrival and our 7-day-a-week WhatsApp assistance keeps you informed of any known delays so you can adjust your stay.
Can you visit the Guiana Space Centre as well as the launch?
Yes. The CSG tour is free but must be booked in advance on the CNES website, with mandatory ID. Make the most of your stay in Kourou to combine it with the Salvation Islands, reachable in around 1 hour by boat from the marina.
