A honeymoon in Guadeloupe is the promise of two islands in one: the turquoise beaches of Grande-Terre on one side, the rainforest and the Soufrière volcano (1,467 m) on the Basse-Terre side. And because the archipelago is a French overseas department (DROM), everything is simpler: no visa, the euro in your wallet, your French health card that works, and a civil marriage possible under the same conditions as in mainland France. After several seasons welcoming honeymoon couples into our properties, here is the planning guide we give our travellers, calendar, formalities and budget included.
When to honeymoon in Guadeloupe?
The ideal window runs from December to April, in the heart of the dry season (the “carême”): 28-30 °C, calm seas, rare showers and clear sunsets on the leeward coast. It is also the high season, so plan ahead.
- December to February: perfect weather, festive atmosphere (Kréyol Christmas, then carnival from January to February). Book your flight and villa 5 to 7 months ahead.
- March-April: an excellent compromise, slightly cheaper than over the holidays, with ideal seas for snorkelling at the Cousteau reserve.
- May-June and November: appealing shoulder seasons for tighter budgets (-20 to -30% on accommodation), with short showers at the end of the day.
- August to October: the heart of the cyclone season, best avoided for a fixed wedding date.
On the logistics side: a direct Paris–Pointe-à-Pitre flight (Pôle Caraïbes airport) takes about 8 h 30, costing between €450 and €900 round trip depending on the season. The time difference is -5 h in winter and -6 h in summer, perfect for scheduling a sunset ceremony around 6 p.m. without crushing jetlag.

Getting married in Guadeloupe: formalities in a French overseas department
This is the big advantage compared with the Seychelles or Bali: Guadeloupe is a French department, so your marriage has immediate legal standing, with no translation or consular transcription required.
A civil marriage at the town hall
The Civil Code applies identically. In practical terms:
- Residency requirement: the marriage must be celebrated in a municipality where one of the future spouses, or one of their parents, has their home or an established residence with at least one month of continuous occupancy. So a mainland couple with no local ties cannot simply “land” and get married in Sainte-Anne.
- File: birth certificates less than 3 months old, ID documents, proof of address, list of witnesses (2 to 4). Submit it 2 to 3 months before the date.
- Publication of banns: at least 10 days before the ceremony.
- Cost: the town-hall celebration is free.
Many of our travellers have a Guadeloupean parent or grandparent: in that case, a marriage in the islands is entirely feasible in Le Gosier, Le Moule or Deshaies.
The secular ceremony, the no-constraint option
If neither of you has local ties, the simplest formula remains: an express civil marriage in mainland France, followed by a symbolic ceremony in Guadeloupe. No formalities, total freedom of venue and timing. Plan for:
- Secular ceremony officiant: €400 to €800
- Photographer (2 to 4 h, “day after” beach shoot included): €250 to €600
- Tropical floral arch (alpinias, porcelain roses): €150 to €400
- Local wedding planner for a small party of 10 to 30 people: €1,500 to €3,500
A vow renewal for a wedding anniversary follows exactly the same logic.
Where to stay: intimate accommodation rather than a resort
Forget anonymous hotel complexes: Guadeloupe’s strength lies in its charming villas and bungalows run by local hosts. Three areas stand out for a romantic stay.
Deshaies and the leeward coast (Basse-Terre)
Our favourite for a honeymoon in Guadeloupe. Grande Anse, a vast golden-sand beach lined with sea grapes, offers the island’s finest sunsets. Wooden bungalows with a private deck from €90-140/night, villas with an infinity pool and sea view between €180 and €350/night. Twenty minutes to the south, Bouillante and Malendure beach open onto the Cousteau reserve: a couples’ first dive at the Pigeon islets from €65/person, a snorkelling outing with the turtles at €25-35.
Sainte-Anne and Saint-François (Grande-Terre)
The “toes in turquoise water” option: the Caravelle lagoon at Sainte-Anne, the marina and golf course at Saint-François, Pointe des Châteaux 11 km away for a memorable sunrise. Cosy studios from €70/night, villas with a pool €150-300/night. It is also the best base camp for exploring: you’ll find our hand-picked properties on our Guadeloupe rentals page.
Les Saintes, the 2-night escape
Terre-de-Haut and its bay, ranked among the most beautiful in the world: ferry from Trois-Rivières in 20 minutes (around €25-30 round trip), an electric scooter at €35/day, a waterside dinner and a night in a Creole cottage facing the bay. Always slip this interlude into a honeymoon itinerary: it’s the one couples come back and tell us about years later.

Romantic Guadeloupe: beaches, dinners and experiences for two
Can you privatise a beach?
Let’s be honest, contrary to what you sometimes read: in France, the coastline belongs to the maritime public domain, so no beach can be fully privatised. In practice, three solutions work very well:
- Privatise a beach restaurant or a carbet in Sainte-Anne or Deshaies for the reception (venue rental €300 to €1,000 depending on the season, catering not included).
- Play with timing: Bois Jolan in Sainte-Anne or Anse de la Perle near Deshaies are almost deserted before 8:30 a.m. and after 5 p.m., ideal for a ceremony or a photo shoot.
- Head to an islet: a private boat excursion to Petite-Terre, a nature reserve populated by iguanas (€95 to €130/person on a shared outing, €800 to €1,200 for a full-day private charter).
Our tried-and-tested couple experiences
- Sunset cruise departing from Le Gosier or Saint-François: €50-80/person, rum and accras included.
- A day on Marie-Galante: the Bielle, Bellevue and Père Labat distilleries, vast and nearly empty beaches (ferry ~€40 round trip).
- A hike to the second Carbet falls followed by a soak in the hot springs on the Bouillante side: free to €4 site access.
- Couples’ massage in the villa: €140-180 an hour, most practitioners travel to you.
- A gourmet Creole dinner (grilled spiny lobster, reinvented colombo): €40 to €70/person.

Budget and countdown: the figures to remember
For a 10-night honeymoon for two in the dry season:
| Item | Realistic budget |

| Intimate accommodation (10 nights) | €1,200 – 2,500 |

Recommended countdown: flights at M-6, accommodation at M-5, ceremony providers at M-4, headline excursions (Petite-Terre, private cruise) at M-1.
One last planning tip: book your accommodation direct. At Hostel Toucan, a concierge service based in the French overseas territories, direct booking saves you the platform fees (often 12 to 15% of the stay, i.e. €150 to €300 saved on a honeymoon), with free cancellation up to 7 days before arrival and 7-day WhatsApp assistance — invaluable for arranging a surprise, a bouquet delivered to the villa or a late transfer. And if you own a property in the archipelago and dream of welcoming honeymoon couples, our local team handles everything: head to our owners page.
FAQ
What is the best time for a honeymoon in Guadeloupe?
From December to April, during the dry season: 28-30 °C, calm seas and rare showers. March-April offers the best weather-to-price ratio. Avoid August to October, the heart of the cyclone season, especially if your ceremony date is fixed.
Can you marry civilly in Guadeloupe without living there?
No. As everywhere in France, a civil marriage requires that one of the future spouses, or one of their parents, has a home or a residence of at least one month in the municipality. With no local ties, marry civilly in mainland France then organise a secular ceremony on an archipelago beach: no formalities are required.
What budget should I plan for a 10-day honeymoon?
Count on between €3,400 and €6,250 for two in the dry season: flights (€1,000-1,600), intimate accommodation (€1,200-2,500), car, excursions and restaurants. By booking your villa direct through Hostel Toucan, you save the platform commissions, i.e. €150 to €300 on such a stay.
Grande-Terre or Basse-Terre for a romantic stay?
Both, ideally. Basse-Terre (Deshaies, Bouillante) for the Grande Anse sunsets, the Cousteau reserve and the rainforest; Grande-Terre (Sainte-Anne, Saint-François) for the Caravelle lagoon and Pointe des Châteaux. A 5 + 5-night combination, rounded off with 2 nights in Les Saintes, is the itinerary we recommend most often.
