Pointe-a-Pitre Airport (Les Abymes): arrival and transfers

Pointe-a-Pitre Pole Caraibes Airport, in the town of Les Abymes, is Guadeloupe’s almost-only gateway: more than 2 million passengers pass through every year. After welcoming our travellers here for years, we know the hours when the car-rental queue overflows and the shortcuts to reach Sainte-Anne or Deshaies stress-free. Here is the complete arrival plan, minute by minute.

Landing at Pointe-a-Pitre Airport: what awaits you

Formalities: simple, you’re still in France

Guadeloupe is a French overseas department and region (DROM). In practice:

  • An ID card or passport is enough for French and European citizens (a passport is recommended if you plan a side trip to Dominica).
  • No customs or visa when arriving from mainland France: you land just as you would in Lyon or Bordeaux.
  • Currency: the euro, the same bank cards, several ATMs in the arrivals hall.
  • Time difference: -5h in winter, -6h in summer compared with Paris.

Flights from Paris (Orly and CDG) take about 8h30 and most land between 1 pm and 5 pm local time: a peak rush hour to keep in mind for what follows.

Luggage and your first breath of tropical air

The baggage belt usually takes 20 to 35 minutes after a full long-haul flight. Use the time to do two useful things:

  • Connect your phone: almost all mainland French plans include Guadeloupe (France zone), so no roaming. From Switzerland or Canada, a local Orange or Digicel SIM can be bought in town for 20 to 30 € with data.
  • Withdraw some cash: handy for markets, bokits and beach snacks that refuse cards under 10 €.

The local dialling code is +590: save your host’s WhatsApp number right now, it’s the channel that works best here.

Guadeloupe Airport: transfer to your accommodation, all the options

An honest answer from a local: without a car, Guadeloupe has to be earned. The bus network matches neither flight schedules nor remote beaches. Here is the real comparison.

All the major rental companies (Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Sixt) and solid local operators have their desks facing the arrivals exit, with car parks 2-5 minutes away on foot.

  • Indicative rates: 25 to 40 €/day for a city car in low season (May-November), 45 to 70 €/day in the dry season from December to April. Book 2 to 3 months ahead for February and Christmas, otherwise prices double.
  • The 3 pm peak trap: when three wide-body jets land back to back, expect 45 minutes to 1 hour of queuing. A tested tip: one member of the group heads straight to the desk while the others collect the bags.
  • Fuel: a fixed price set by prefectural decree, identical everywhere (around 1.80 €/L).
  • Driving: on the right, the same rules as mainland France. The only surprises: speed bumps in built-up areas and tropical downpours that make the road slippery.

Taxi and private hire from the airport

The taxi rank is right in front of the arrivals hall. Fares are regulated but climb quickly with distance, and a 40% surcharge applies at night (7 pm-7 am), on Sundays and public holidays:

  • Le Gosier: 25 to 35 €, about 20 minutes
  • Sainte-Anne: 45 to 60 €, about 35 minutes
  • Saint-Francois: 60 to 80 €, about 50 minutes
  • Deshaies: 80 to 110 €, about 1h10
  • Bouillante (Malendure): 90 to 120 €, about 1h15

Uber doesn’t operate in Guadeloupe and the availability of local private-hire drivers stays unpredictable when flights land: for a night transfer or a group, book a driver in advance.

Guadeloupe airport shuttle: what really exists

Let’s be transparent: there is no dedicated public shuttle linking the airport to the seaside resorts, contrary to what you sometimes read. The real options:

  • Karu’lis buses: some lines pass near the airport towards Pointe-a-Pitre and Les Abymes (1 to 2 €), but with mandatory connections and no reliable service in the evening or on Sundays.
  • Shared private shuttles: by booking at least 48h ahead, around 20 to 30 € per person to the southern riviera (Gosier, Sainte-Anne, Saint-Francois).
  • A transfer arranged by your host: often the simplest solution. At Hostel Toucan, we coordinate your arrival through our 7-day WhatsApp support and point you to the right driver at the right price.

Reaching Grande-Terre or Basse-Terre: real travel times

The airport sits at the centre of the “butterfly”, at the foot of the bridge linking the two wings. Real observed times, traffic jams included.

Towards Grande-Terre (beaches and seaside life)

  • Le Gosier: 15-25 min (12 km) — the first tourist area, handy for a late arrival
  • Sainte-Anne: 30-40 min (25 km) — Caravelle beach and the lagoon
  • Saint-Francois: 45-55 min (38 km) — the marina and access to Pointe des Chateaux
  • Le Moule: 35-45 min (28 km) — the Atlantic coast, surf spots

Watch out: the Pointe-a-Pitre ring road clogs up between 6.30-8.30 am and 4.30-6.30 pm on weekdays. Landing at 4 pm puts you right in the evening jam: add 20 to 30 minutes.

Towards Basse-Terre (volcano, waterfalls and the Cousteau Reserve)

  • Petit-Bourg / Goyave: 20-30 min — gateway to the National Park and the Carbet Falls
  • Deshaies: 50 min-1h10 (35 km via the north coast) — the sublime Grande Anse beach
  • Bouillante / Malendure: 1h-1h15 (45 km) — diving and snorkelling in the Cousteau Reserve, opposite the Pigeon islets
  • Basse-Terre town and La Soufriere: 1h15-1h30 (60 km) — for hikers aiming for the 1,467 m summit

Field tip: if you’re staying in Deshaies or Bouillante and land after 6 pm, do your shopping before leaving the Pointe-a-Pitre area — on the leeward coast everything closes early and night falls at 6 pm all year round.

And for the islands?

For Les Saintes or Marie-Galante, the ferries leave from Trois-Rivieres, Saint-Francois or the port of Pointe-a-Pitre (15 minutes from the airport), 25 to 45 € return. Avoid scheduling the crossing on the day you land: one flight delay and the last ferry has gone. Our complete guide to Guadeloupe details schedules and combinations.

Organising your arrival well: the Hostel Toucan checklist

  • 30 days out: book the car (especially between December and April, the high dry season).
  • 7 days out: check your mobile plan, download offline maps.
  • On the day: tell your host your real landing time; keep 50 € in cash; swimsuit at the top of the bag (Gosier beach is 20 minutes away…).
  • On arrival: just one of the group at the rental desks, the others at the luggage.

By booking one of our properties in Guadeloupe accommodation, you receive a personalised arrival guide before departure: a precise route from Pointe-a-Pitre Airport, a self-access code if you arrive late, the good local addresses of the neighbourhood. Direct booking with no platform fees, free cancellation up to 7 days before arrival, 7-day WhatsApp support — invaluable when the plane is two hours late. Do you own a property on the archipelago? Our concierge service for owners handles these arrivals for you, from the late welcome to the handover of the keys.

FAQ

How long should I allow between landing and leaving Pointe-a-Pitre Airport?

Allow 30 to 50 minutes between the doors opening and exiting with luggage: no immigration control coming from mainland France, but the baggage belt is slow at peak times (1-5 pm). Add 45 minutes to 1 hour for a rental car in high season.

Is there a shuttle between the airport and Sainte-Anne or Le Gosier?

No, there is no direct public shuttle. Your options: a taxi (45-60 € to Sainte-Anne, 25-35 € to Le Gosier), a shared private shuttle booked ahead (20-30 € per person), or renting a car straight from the airport, which remains the most cost-effective solution from the first 3 days of the stay.

Can you sleep near the airport in case of a late arrival?

A few hotels exist less than 10 minutes away in Les Abymes, but it’s only useful for an early inter-island flight the next day. Until 10 pm, reaching Le Gosier (20 minutes) or Sainte-Anne (35 minutes) stays doable: our Hostel Toucan properties have self-access for late check-ins.

Will my phone work in Guadeloupe at no extra cost?

If your plan is French, yes in the vast majority of cases: Guadeloupe is included in the France zone (calls, texts, data). Still, check your overseas (DOM) data allowance before departure. From abroad, the dialling code is +590.
